For most construction
methods, triangles are cut from squares which are then cut in half
on the diagonal, making two triangles.
The square must include the seam allowance aroung both triangles.
To obtain this seam allowance, use the finished size of the triangle
and add 7/8".
For example, if you needed a finished triangle that needs to be
4½",
you need to cut the square 5 3/8" (4 4/8" + 7/8").
Then place the two squares right sides together.
Draw a diagonal line through the square (see diagram).
Sew ¼ away on both sides of the drawn line.
Cut the square diagonally on the drawn line.
Press open, trim off ears of seam allowance and square up to the needed
finished size.
This technique will yield 2 half-square triangle units.
