Karen Hanken’s latest quilt, “Nana - Our Lady of Glenside” won honorable mention in the “ I Remember Mama” competition which premiered at the Houston Quilt Festival.. The quilt appears in the Jan/Feb issue of “Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine”. Karen attended the opening of the exhibit with Jonathan and her mother, who flew in from the east coast and who will receive the quilt when it ceases its travel with the rest of the exhibit during the next year. The entirely pieced quilt was made in memory of Karen’s maternal grandmother who was the first born American to Italian immigrants.

Kathy Butts has a featured article in the same issue of QNM on Easy Pieced Labels using a freezer-paper technique she has perfected.

"Lugano to Zurich" is second in a series of quilts by Karen Hanken of TopStitch. The quilt has been accepted in the Tactile Architecture 2004 Special Exhibit of the International Quilt Festival, Houston, November 4-7. Karen transfers her digital photos to the computer then "collages" them to form her original artwork. Her quilt contains no paper piecing or raw edge techniques.

The first of Karen's "series" traveled to the Netherlands and has just returned "home"! Make it a point to see these exceptional quilts. You won't be disappointed. It may be awhile before "Lugano to Zurich" is back in the Rogue Valley. ~ September, 2004

Jo Stuebing has a wholecloth trapunto wallhanging in a new book titled Whitework Quilting published by On-Word Bound Books by Karen McTavish. It gives step by step instructions for this technique. Jo also has a featured quilt in the new Sharyn Craig book Great Sets, by C & T Publishing. ~ June, 2004

Spotted in the Jan/Feb 2004 issue of Quilters Newsletter Magazine is Kathy Butts “Katherine Conner’s Wheels.” It’s in the “Quilt Show” page 50. ~ March, 2004

Among Cassandra Williams latest honors is the purchase by the Museum of American Quilt Society of “The Map Makers” quilt (Lewis & Clark). “River Run” has been shipped to the Hague, Netherlands, for a special exhibit and a one woman show is scheduled for June 23-July 29, 2004 at the Latimer Quilt & Textile Center, Tillamook, Oregon. At the Road to California Show, mid-January “River Run” took best use of color and “Jigsaw Giants” garnered 2nd place Innovative. “Walrus on the Rocks” took 1st Pictorial Wall Quilt at the Mid-Atlantic Show.

Congratulations to Quilt Artist Cassandra Williams. Cassandra’s quilt “The Map Makers” took “Best of Show” in the Lewis & Clark National Competition. This contest was part of the AQS Exposition in Nashville, Tennessee. The quilt will be displayed from October 4, 2003 to January 3, 2004 at the American Quilt Museum in Paducah Kentucky. The National Lewis & Clark Committee has requested “The Map Makers” go on tour of the US Major museums along the Lewis & Clark Trail for 3 years.

Cassandra first wishes to enter the quilt in the “Threads of America Quilt Competition” held in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee on March 1, 2004. Best of show there wins $10,000. If you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing this quilt you are in for a treat when it returns to Oregon. In the meantime, you can see a picture in the November 2003 Quilter’s Newsletter Magazine, page 16. Another of Cassandra’s creations “Mountain Memories” appeared in the July/August 2003 issue of QNM.

Kathy Butts entry “Rose Gate” won first place in the Siskiyou Country Quilt Guild Challenge sponsored by Woods’n Threads, Yreka, CA, “Impressions in Black & White.” Idabel Crowell received an Honorable Mention.

Cassandra Williams is the Featured Quilter at the Umpqua Quilt Show held in Roseburg at the Fairgrounds, April 25-27.

Carol Balone has a quilt in APNQ’s latest traveling exhibit called “Telling Secrets.” The quiltmakers for this invitational exhibition were invited randomly based on membership in the Association of Pacific Northwest Quilters with geographic representation. Participants were asked to consider a mystery that has revealed itself or perhaps has never been told.

Kathy Butts quilt “Katherine Conner’s Wheels” which was shown at the Houston Quilt Festival in 2001 is a feature in the Hall & Haywood newly released book Foundation Borders. It is available locally and through AQS.

If you get a chance to look through the newly released book from AQS Fabric Dying for Beginners by Vimela McClure, be sure to note that MSQG Member Barb Backman made 3 of the blocks!

Also noted is Yvonne Badura’s quilt in a book just out, Get Looped With Billie, A New Look at Bargello Quilts by Billie Lauder.

More recognition for Cassandra Williams. She was honored at the International Quilt Festival 2002, Houston, TX by receiving a Judges Choice award from Joen Wolfrom for “River Run”. Cassandra also received 3rd Place Pictorial for “Jigsaw Giants” and 1st Place Pictorial for “River Run”. As reported, Cassandra was awarded Best of Innovative for “Jigsaw Giants” at the August 2002 APNQ show in Seattle, WA. “Mountain Memories” received Best of All Wall Quilts and “Here Kitty Kitty” received 2nd in Innovative at the Pacific International Quilt Festival in Santa Clara, October 2002. “Here Kitty Kitty” and “Encounter Trio” are featured in Great American Quilts 2003 published by Oxmoor House. Congratulations to Cassandra.
